GAF Ridge Vent Installation: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide

If you’ve got a GAF ridge vent that’s cracked, leaking, or blown loose during a summer storm, we install a replacement in Fort Lauderdale for $385 to $720 in most cases, depending on the linear footage and whether the old vent needs full removal. Most homes along the Las Olas Isles and inland neighborhoods like Victoria Park and Rio Vista fall right in that range. You’ll usually spot the problem after a hard rain: water staining on the ceiling near an exterior wall, or a vent section you can see lifting from the street. Greg Holloway walks every roof himself before quoting, because ridge vent failures in South Florida almost always involve more than just the plastic.

Which GAF Models This Applies To

The installation applies to GAF’s Cobra Ridge Vent line: Cobra Ridge Vent, Cobra Snow Country, and the newer Cobra Exhaust Vent for metal roofs. The most common we see on Fort Lauderdale homes is the standard Cobra Ridge Vent, which comes in 4-foot sections and works with GAF Timberline, Royal Sovereign, and most architectural shingle lines. Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners miss: GAF’s warranty documentation assumes the ridge vent matches the shingle system. If you mix a GAF vent with an Owens Corning or CertainTeed shingle, it’ll function, but you’ll lose the integrated system warranty. We stock GAF-compatible ridge vent on the truck as well as equivalent units from Owens Corning and CertainTeed, so if your shingles are from one of those brands, we’ll match them instead.

To identify what you have, look at the vent from a ladder or the ground. GAF’s Cobra Ridge Vent has a distinctive baffled profile under the cap shingles. The old section will have a white manufacturer sticker if it hasn’t baked off in the sun, which it often has after five or six years in Broward County heat. If the sticker’s gone, measure the exposed width: GAF’s standard Cobra is about 11.5 inches wide after installation. When in doubt, we pull a cap shingle and check the baffle pattern. That takes us ten minutes and tells us exactly what belongs up there.

Signs Your GAF Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing

  • Water stains on ceilings near exterior walls. A cracked or shifted ridge vent lets wind-driven rain into the attic, and gravity carries it down to the ceiling drywall inside the outer walls. This is the most common call we get after a Fort Lauderdale afternoon downpour.
  • Visible lifting or separation at the ridge line. The plastic vent sections expand and contract in the heat, and after enough thermal cycles the nails back out or the end caps detach. You can see this from the ground with a good pair of eyes or a phone camera zoomed in.
  • Roofing granule buildup in the gutter near the ridge. A failing ridge vent lets water sit under the cap shingles, which accelerates shingle wear directly above the vent. If your gutters have more granules than usual near the roof peak, water is getting where it shouldn’t.
  • Attic temperature spikes in summer. A blocked or crushed vent loses its ability to exhaust hot air. If your attic feels dramatically hotter than last year and your AC is working harder, the vent’s airflow path may be collapsed or clogged with debris.
  • Unusual noises from the ridge during storms. A loose vent rattles and bangs in wind. You’ll hear it at night during squalls. That’s the vent physically moving against the shingles, and it’s only going to get worse the longer it flaps.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Most GAF ridge vent installations in Fort Lauderdale run $385 to $720 complete. That includes removing the old vent sections, inspecting the roof decking underneath for water damage or rot, installing the new vent, replacing the cap shingles, and hauling everything away. The price moves based on two things: linear feet of ridge line and whether the old vent’s fasteners have rusted into the decking and need grinding out or the decking needs spot repair first. Bigger homes with long ridge lines in neighborhoods like Coral Ridge or Imperial Point push toward the higher end. You’ll get a written line-item quote before any work starts, so you know the exact number and what’s in it. If we find decking damage after opening the ridge, we stop and walk you through what we found with photos before adding anything to the scope.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check what’s wrong without getting on the roof. Look for visible lifting from the ground, check your attic for daylight or water streaks, and take photos. What you shouldn’t do is pull the old vent yourself. Ridge vents sit at the very peak of the roof, and working on a pitched roof in Fort Lauderdale heat with a tool in your hand is a fall risk no homeowner should take. Beyond the safety issue, the real problem DIY repairs miss is what’s underneath: by the time a GAF ridge vent fails visibly, there’s frequently moisture in the decking that you can’t see until the vent’s off. We walk every roof with you before we quote, show you what we found, and tell you the price before we touch the roof. That’s just how it should work.
