CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation: The Fort Lauderdale Owner’s Guide
We install CertainTeed-compatible ridge vents across Fort Lauderdale, with most full ridge vent installations on a standard single-family home running $650 to $1,400 including materials, labor, and cleanup. If your existing ridge vent is cracked, sun-baked, or pulling away from the shingles, we can usually get a crew out the same week to assess it and give you a written price before any work starts. Most homeowners discover the problem the hard way: a hot attic, higher cooling bills, or damp spots on the ceiling after a hard South Florida downpour.

Ridge vents run the length of your roof peak and work by letting hot, humid air escape continuously. In Fort Lauderdale, where attic temperatures regularly climb past 140°F in August, a failed ridge vent doesn’t just make the house uncomfortable. It shortens shingle life, invites mold into the decking, and pushes your AC to run longer than it should.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To
CertainTeed currently sells ridge vents under two main product families: the Air Vent® ShingleVent® II and the Filtered Ridge Vent series. Both are designed to work with CertainTeed’s full line of asphalt shingles, including Landmark, XT 25, and Presidential Shake lines. The ShingleVent II is the one we see most often on Fort Lauderdale homes built or re-roofed in the last 15 years. It has a distinctive baffle profile and an external wind baffle that deflects wind-driven rain, which matters more in South Florida than most places.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha owners run into: not every “CertainTeed ridge vent” on a shelf is the right one for your roof. The ShingleVent II comes in different lengths, typically 4-foot sections, and the end caps and connectors are product-specific. If the ridge vent you’re replacing is thicker than about 5/8 inch at the peak, you’re likely dealing with the Filtered Ridge Vent or a competitor’s product, and we’ll need to check the profile before ordering. We stock genuine CertainTeed ridge vent sections and connectors on our trucks, plus quality aftermarket equivalents from GAF and Owens Corning when the CertainTeed version isn’t the best fit for the existing cut-out width. One more spec worth knowing: CertainTeed recommends a minimum net free ventilating area of 18 square inches per linear foot for the ShingleVent II. If your existing vent was undersized for your attic square footage, a straight swap won’t fix your ventilation problem. You’d need to widen the roof cut, and that’s a job we quote honestly rather than gloss over.

Signs Your CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing
- Cracked or brittle plastic baffles visible from a ladder. South Florida UV exposure breaks down the polypropylene shell faster than in drier climates. Once the baffle cracks, rain gets driven straight into the attic during storms.
- Shingles lifting around the ridge line. When the vent’s fasteners loosen or the underlying wood swells from moisture, the shingles nailed over the vent edge start to peel back. You’ll see it from the ground as a wavy ridge.
- Attic temperature spikes on sunny days. The vent’s whole job is letting heat out. If the attic feels like a sauna by mid-morning, the airflow path is blocked, likely by a collapsed baffle or a clogged filter pad inside the vent.
- Musty smell or damp insulation near the roof peak. This is the one that costs real money if ignored. Water intrusion through a failed ridge vent in Fort Lauderdale leads to deck rot and mold, and by the time you smell it, the repair scope has grown.
- Visible gaps between vent sections. The connectors between 4-foot vent sections can separate as the roof expands and contracts through our wet-dry seasons. A half-inch gap looks small, but it’s a funnel for tropical rain driven sideways.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a typical Fort Lauderdale single-story home with 30 to 50 linear feet of ridge line, a full CertainTeed ridge vent replacement runs $650 to $1,100. A two-story home with longer ridge lines or multiple peaks typically lands between $900 and $1,400. That range includes removing the old vent and any failed shingles around it, inspecting the roof decking underneath for water damage, installing the new vent sections with proper fasteners and connectors, re-shingling over the vent edges, and hauling away all debris.
What moves the price? If the decking under the old vent is soft or rotted, we’ll show you before we replace it and give you a line-item price for the repair. If the existing roof cut is too narrow for the vent to function properly, widening it adds labor. You’ll always know the number before we start. And every ridge vent installation is covered by our written guarantee plus the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if anything about the install fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. Greg Holloway walks every roof himself before we quote it, so you’re getting a number based on what’s actually up there, not a guess from Google Earth.
DIY or Call Us?
Ridge vent work lives on the roof peak, and the roof peak is the last place anyone should be without fall protection and the right training. The CertainTeed ShingleVent II installs under the ridge cap shingles, which means you’re removing and re-nailing shingles at the highest point of the house, working across the slope while handling a 4-foot plastic section in the wind. The risk of a slip is real, and the decking up there is often softest right where the vent failed.
What you can safely do from the ground: look for gaps between vent sections, check whether shingles along the ridge are lifting, and note whether your attic feels hotter than it used to. That’s useful information to share when you call. What you shouldn’t do is get on a ladder with a pry bar and start pulling vent sections. If one is cracked, the surrounding shingles are likely brittle too, and a small job can turn into a big one five minutes in. Call (754) 732-9325 and we’ll put eyes on it, tell you what we found, and hand you a written price before any work starts. That’s just how it should work.
FAQs
In Fort Lauderdale’s sun and salt air, you can expect 12 to 18 years from a ridge vent before the plastic gets brittle, assuming the original install was done correctly and the attic has adequate intake ventilation. The shingles over the vent usually need attention before the vent itself fails.
Small gaps between vent sections can sometimes be reconnected, but cracked baffles and sun-damaged plastic need full replacement. Patching a ridge vent with sealant is a temporary fix that fails again, usually during the next summer storm. We’ll tell you honestly which category yours falls into when we see it. Call (754) 732-9325 for a free assessment.
Most single-home ridge vent replacements in Fort Lauderdale are finished in one day, start to finish. We remove the old vent, inspect the decking, install the new sections, re-shingle, and clean up before the crew leaves.
We stock CertainTeed ShingleVent II sections and connectors on our trucks, along with quality alternatives from GAF and Owens Corning. If your home needs a different profile or a longer run than we carry, we can usually have it in hand within a day or two and will tell you that timeline up front.
If your CertainTeed ridge vent is showing any of the signs above, call (754) 732-9325 to schedule a free estimate. We’ll walk your roof, tell you exactly what’s happening up there, and put the number in writing before a single nail is pulled.
